I remember months ago seeing pictures of this new HD standard that would be coming out that would eventually take the place of using the normal IDE cables. I believe it was called Serial ATA 150.. whatever happened to that?

Don't be affraid, Serial ATA is here to stay. You'll see this new standard's presence much more in 2003 than 2002. Wait & See !

i just got an asus p4s8x w\ serial ata and plan on getting a 40 gig seagate barracuda right after chritmas

Serial ATA is going to be good. It offers larger data bandwidth, more reliable transfers, lower power consumption, smaller cabling and intercompatibility. Parallel ATA has been in use for over fifteen years and is reaching its limits. Also with Serial ATA there is no Master/Slave hierachy and the drives are hot pluggable. Serial ATA should be around for the next ten years too.
