Creating Spray Tags
Tips & Tricks
You can create the spray tag in any imaging program, just save as a bitmap
Make sure the dimensions are divisible by 16 pixels
128x64 & 64x128 are the magical resolutions that are sharp and not blurry
The last color in the pallete has to be pure blue (RGB: 0, 0, 255) the parts that are colored this color will be transparent
You use Wally (http://www.telefragged.com/wally/)to make it into "spray tag" format - it has a built in spray tag creation wizard
Where do I download Wally?
This is the OFFICIAL site, if it's not here do a google search

Problem
Blue outline on your tag?
Solution
you pretty much gotta go pixel-by-pixel to get good transparency in tags, soft edged lines show up like poop in game. Even the slightest color different from "Pure Blue" (RGB: 0, 0, 255) will show up as blue in game and not transparent, refer to image below.

Recently I've been making a few tags for my friend. A good way to fix the Pure Blue/Not Pure Blue pixel problem in a snap is...
1) Save the file, sans Pure Blue Background, as a transparent GIF.
2) Open the GIF file.
3) Create a new layer underneath the tag.
4) Fill said layer with pure blue.
When you save it as a GIF, you won't have any partially opaque pixels left.

What's the 128x64 & 64x128 you're talking about. Inches, Cm, or Pixels?

Are you kidding me? Why in your right mind would you ever consider inches, let alone cm.
That would be huge man, use your mind. Of course it's pixels.

Ok, I am using Wally and I have a .bmp for my spray, it has a backround so i don't need to make it all the pure blue... but for the palette I need to make the last color pure blue... rite?... How do i do that? I'm not sure how to change the last one to the pure blue. The size is all good and dosen't exceede the size limit... its also divisible by 16. and when i spray it there is no color and the whole thing is like a see through gray and white.
... I somehow got this into the wrong area.... i wanted to post it here... lol...

- COLORS > EDIT PALETTE
- double click the bottomright square
- make it 0, 0, 255 (RGB)
- go back to the image and tweak anywhere that got screwed up because of the palette edit...
it should work then.

HMmmmm hi. I made a spray that started as 500x 500. I added some images and some text than saved it as a bmp at 126x 126. Then i opened it in wallly and did the same thing by making the last color in the palette pure blue and saved it. For some reason in game it is still blurry and all pixely. Why is it doing that? thanks

Did you make the image 128x64 originally or did you resize it?

Liquor_Riss
09-20-2004, 09:52 AM
Yeah it does, if you resize something it'll screw up the proportions, thus making it go blurry. What you wanna do is start with a 128x64 or 64x128 canvas, then when you go to use it it won't be blurry.

it's because your LAST color of the pallete isn't pure blue.
the last color in the decal pallete HAS TO BE PURE BLUE.

I am having the same problem as the guy who used bad spelling. I do not see the option to set as a .wad file on Wally. I tried the button Export, but all it has is .m8 .jpg .png .wal .mip .tex .swl .tga .bmp and .pcx
Please tell me what file type to choose. ANd yes I did try to follow wally's tutorial, but their was no import button and none of it seemed made for Counter Strike. Also my Image is black and white, although future images will be in color.

there is no CS option, there's a half life wad option though.

alright so after playing CS for 5 or more years i've decided i want to make my own spray...i created the whole thing in photoshop, it's the right size and i've tried everything i can think of, followed all directions on here and other sites to get it to work but still nothing works. I've tried using wally's and some other one called decal converter. Basically its taking the jpg file and creating a .wad file, into pldecal.wad and tempdecal.wad. I've set both of them to read-only and still getting nothing? I'm pretty good with the computer i just can't figure out why this isn't working...the custom spray doesn't work on any server, even if i start my own....any suggestions or comments are much appreciated.
Thanks!

tip: jpeg has lossy compression, save it as a bmp when you import into wally for optimal quality.
you might not be saving the spray to the right place. search your steam folder for tempdecal.wad - and see what comes up, the tempdecal.wad you replace should be in the cstrike folder.

that means you're using wally wrong.
is it possible to get someone to fix up the picture for you. then move that picture in the folders?

hey threeboy!
i'm struggling to make a CSS spray tag....i make a new canvas in Photoshop CS2
to the size of 256 x 128, with a solid background, i make the tag as you would normally, then select the tag using the magic wand...
then i use the channels, create a new alpha channel and delete the tag so that a white patch remains where the tag was, then i save it as a .tga, i check the box where it says "alpha channels" and save it as a 32 bit/pixel image.
when i load css and choose to browse where my tag is, the tag i have just saved as a .tga appears fully transparent in the game...not blotchy or pixelated but see through!
then i had an idea to open one of your tags - the "owned" terrorist tag in photoshop and dragged my tag over and reapplied the alpha channel and saved it again....and it still shows as transparent in the game!
is it a setting i have on photoshop that i need to change? it's racking my brains dude! your help would be much appreciated!
P.S the link to that NTL site on making CSS tags is no longer in use or "is temporarily unavailable" just to let you know...in case you didn't already

Hey threeboy, thanks for offering to help...shortly after u asked me to email u the files, i realised...it could have been while creating a new canvas, the "background contents" field needed to be set to "white"...instead of being set to "background colour" - when it is set to background colour you get an opaque version of the tag when you come to spraying it in CSS...when it is set to white you get a badboy tag!
thanks for offering to help out though! much appreciated!
