Was this during and upgrade to XP...or have you been running XP and suddenly had the problem after a crash.
btw..i already went to the microsoft site....either way it is (from above)..microsoft tells you want to do on the site. shouldnt be to bad.

eh, well. If anything serious ever happens to my computer. I would just format the drive. I suggest it.
Just put you WinXP disk in your cd drive, and start that baby up. If it doesnt read it, then you will have to flash your bios and make sure that the boot sequence starts with your CD rom drive.

btw, I really suggest going to microsofts site if you didn't do it.

it seems microsoft has wiped my pc clean of xp TOTALY unfortuantly i lent my copy of xp to a freind and the little scumbag made copys of it and because there were more than one copy on line at the same time xp detected this and i now cant put xp on my pc ever again :(

well..besides the issue of copying microsoft software....
umm, that wouldn't quite be possible. if XP was on your computer, then it wouldn't have been able to go onto his for registration. xp home & pro do checks for 3 or more hardware changes, if there is more than 3 changes, it requires you re-register your edition of xp.
i'd just suggest trying reinstall it on your computer..or tell your friend to take it off his comp since it was yours. btw..i dont suggest giving away copies of XP.

*pats his legit XP PRO*
Oh, I also had a problem when I installed my XP home (other computer) since the hardware changed substantially, I just phoned in and since I'm a LEGIT user no problems whatsoever :)

Also SP1 won't install if you have a dodgy registeration key. Don't ask me how I know, but I do.
