i'd go with maxtor as well, they're a better company. the drive i posted can also be found at compusa for $89 AR. i can't find a maxtor or wd sata 160gb for under 120

Back when all this stuff was initially created, parallel was the smarter way to send this type of data. But since technology has become better, the transmission of 'serial' data has become much faster, even though you're sending it out in a single file line.
Basically..parallel has become far out of date compared to what serial can do now-a-days.
That, and serial has an advantage with stop-and-go transmissions since when you stop it, your not actually stoping numerous bits, only one.

Computers are pretty much switching everything over to serial...


With the introduction of ATA-7, it seems that the parallel ATA standard that has been in use for more than 10 years is running out of steam. Sending data at rates faster than 133 MB/sec down a parallel ribbon cable is fraught with all kinds of problems because of signal timing, electromagnetic interference, and other integrity problems. The solution is a new ATA interface called serial ATA, which is an evolutionary backward-compatible replacement for the parallel ATA physical storage interface.

SATA won't be integrated into PCs overnight; however it is clear to me that it will eventually replace parallel ATA as the de facto standard internal storage device interface found in PCs. . .

The performance of SATA is impressive. There are 3 variations; they differ only in transfer rate performance.

I've heard (A) Current SATA drives can't yet take full advantage of the SATA standard speed wise, and (B) SATA drives run very hot.

And I think you'd want something more of the 10,000 RPM variety (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-200&catalog=14&depa=1), anyway (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-160&catalog=14&depa=1).

(A) it's still faster than IDE
(B) i've never seen a cool HDD. they're all quite hot. i've also never heard of a HDD overheating
