I really like XP. I find it easier and more friendly to do formats and all that stuff with. It is my favorite Windows.

XP home blows. I can't believe how many problems my Dad has with it. XP Pro is the only way to go (Windows wise)

I run XP home on my other computer... no problems so far. what kind of problems is your dad having?

We install a DSL modem and it completely flipped out. It was displaying all these weird colour patterns and locking up completely as soon as you log in to Windows. If the modem was disconnected it worked fine, even with the modem's drivers and software still installed.
We had to take it back and get a router instead.

That doesnt sound like homes problems, Pro and Home dont differ driver wise

That is 'semi'-true. The biggest reason people buy XP PRO is for reliability. Less system crashes.
They don't call it PRO for nothing.

Umm routers replace DSL modems? Neat.
Yeah I had a nice problem that wouldnt fix with any OS because Im an idiot. I plugged in XP Pro and it immediately comes up with a driver conflict. See, I had the onboard soundcard and my SB Live plugged in and both trying to work at the same time. Smart. ;)

I am not sure if you were being sarcastic with that first part, but routers DO NOT replace dsl modems. Completely different objects.
On the soundcard problem. That is always the first thing you want to before loading up an OS. Make sure all the BIOS settings are correct..and that what is needed to be turned off...is off.

Haha yeah I figured that one out as soon as we installed XP Pro. Then I just took my soundcard out because I had broken it by jamming too many speaker inputs into it. But yeah, I was being sarcastic. He said he had to replace his modem with a router. Hah! ;)

We had to take it back and get a router instead.I dont think that's the fault of XP home...

They don't call it PRO for nothing.I'm pretty sure they're the same OS. all that differs is the amount of control. Pro lets you define all these different user classes, Home has 2.

Windows XP: Home - $199 US
Windows XP: Pro - $299 US
Is it worth paying extra for WinXP Pro?

If you're a business or a "proffessional" then yes. If you are a "home" user only, then no. If it's all the same price because you have a microsoft subscription or some other method of obtaining either *cough*, then go with pro.

Yes, it's worth it in the long run for all the extra features you get.

Heh.
Because, a modem is your actual internet connection. Your modem hooks up TO a router, which protects your computers and manages the network structure.
A modem gets your connection.
A router actually thinks, and sorts.
They are far from being the same type of device.

In short, what isn't wrong with that?

if anyone here plans on purchasing a copy of XP they should go with home unless they run dual CPU
they are the same OS and pro only a few extra features nobody really uses and pro is not more stable then home they are the same
Threeboy
03-16-2003, 01:37 PM
I run dual, so I run pro.
but yes as digital says, if there's no reason to run pro, don't run it.

Umm. You might not see it on a day to day basis, but that is why NT and other Pro versions were made. To better network connections and computer reliability. I'm not saying XP Pro is truley going to stop a crash that XP Home wont...but there is a rhyme to my reason.
