Apparently Microsoft is having to cut back on some of the new features from its new operating system codenamed 'Longhorn' in order to get it out by 2006.
Even with a cut down version, it will be the longest period between releases in Windows history. Windows XP was released in 2001.
Problems will likely have been compounded by the fact that much of the Windows development team being involved in developing Service Pack 2 for Windows XP.
However this should mean that both XP and 'Longhorn' will be more secure.

Whats OEM, I'm such a n00bOriginal Equipment Manufactuer - it's software that computer manufacturers are supposed to bundle with a new PC, but some places sell it seperately for cheap. It's cheaper because they usually just the CD and the manual, no box.

I would give you the other option, then you'd ask me what pirating was.. :pPirating an OS is a bad idea to me, windows has enough holes as it is and with the pirate versions you usually can't download the windows update service packs...

Yeah, I made the mistake of using a cracked/pirated version for years with Windows XP.

I got a Credit Card now, so I'll find a OEM Version of Windows XP Professional sometime. I want to wait until it has SP2 intergrated, then I'll buy it.

Anyone know a good place?

It is the codename of the next version of Windows, due out in 2006.
Previous codenames have included: Chicago (Windows 95), Memphis (Windows 98) and Whistler (Windows XP).
Remember that Windows XP was code-named Whistler and the next version of Windows, at the time, was code-named Blackcomb. Both of these names come from ski areas in British Columbia, close to Microsoft's headquarters. At the foot of Whistler Mountain, there is a saloon named Longhorn that serves the local skiing population. So if you're ever in the area and want to take in some local color, Longhorn is a nice stop… after you're done with Whistler.

I know that Alienware has computers with either Windows XP Home SP 2 and Windows XP Pro SP2

I had the beta of Longhorn installed, so did a few of my friends. The nightly that I had wasn't much of an improvement from XP. IMHO, it was ugly as hell. You can see some of the screenshots here (http://code13.org/caps/thumbnails.php?album=26).

Oh and about the piracy thing. I fully support it. Especially if you're gonna pirate M$. Though, I'll only pirate stuff if I need to. There's always [legally] free alternatives. :]

it does look rather ho-hum... hopefully they will pretty it up a bit but really who cares about the OS's look - Functionality is what matters, I disable all that skin shit too. Most gameslaunch in full screen mode anyway :p

When I use XP, I always switch to classic mode. ;) But you are right, it is all about functionality. And that is even starting to look beat, considering they dropped WinFS to make a realistic date.

"Microsoft has set late 2006 as the deadline for shipping Longhorn, but to make that date, it had to delay the full implementation of WinFS, an ambitious file system geared at letting users search through all of their files at once. In this interview with Bill Gates, he provides a summary of why Microsoft decided to drop WinFS, saying: "WinFS, I'd be the first to say, is very ambitious. Nobody has ever brought together the world of documents, media and structured information in giving you one simple set of verbs that lets you richly find, move around and replicate those things." Meanwhile, MS Watch has published Longhorn head-honcho Jim Allchin's memo on why some Longhorn features had to be axed."
