This is the first serious website I've ever made. It's for my comic. take a look

cool; are you going to have a frame on the right side or something? (wondering what that extra scroll bar is for); and it seems a logo would add much to the page, too

szkud

In Safari, the scroll bars are suppressed. I'm not sure exactly how to get rid of them on other browsers without making it so you can't scroll.

I could get a better archive setup and fix that scroll bar thing. For now though, I'm pretty happy with it.

Well, ~90% of the internet uses Internet Explorer, soo.. *g*

szkud

Actually, by Awstats' count ~70% of the browsers perusing my site are MSIE and ~25% Safari.

Not bad considering how new Safari is, that it's limited to Macs and MSIE is an option for Mac users [Comes with Panther and Jaguar].

There's a PC in the house, I'll turn it on and see what it looks like there. Try to clean it up a little. No idea how I'll do it, but I'll try all the same

Shamus
03-05-2004, 08:52 PM
Macs also account for about 3% of the computers surfing the internet (link (http://www.google.com/press/zeitgeist.html), link (http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp)) :p

Edit: I just noticed you said YOUR site, not the internet in general :rolleyes:

szkud

my site. not the whole internet

Edit: Just saw, you saw, I said my site (:

I wonder what the 12 unknown hits were.

brentech
03-07-2004, 06:39 AM
Hey greg.
I'm sure there might be some other people using safari, but you're site tracker is counting hits. Not visits. That means that every time you refresh your site, you are incrementing the amount of hits for safari. And being that you own the site and use safari, i am sure that if you had yourself IP blocked, that number would be very low.
And if not only with refreshes either, if you have the counter code on all the pages of your site, then everytime you click a link within your site it is doing it too.So I wouldnt really use that tracker.

god, i love those websites.

chrisv
03-07-2004, 09:20 PM
Your site is good, but the ability to move between comics would make it twice as good.

szkud
03-07-2004, 09:23 PM
not quite sure how to do that without making a new page for every single comic individually coded to advance to the next though

zubaz
03-07-2004, 10:04 PM
do you have php installed on that server? cause I could write you 3 lines of code that would do it.

szkud
03-07-2004, 10:07 PM
it's wisd0m hosting. it has phpBB and MySQL [ I assume that has something to do with php ] so yeah, I'm sure it does. I just have no idea what php is.

omgwtfdan
03-08-2004, 04:06 PM
php is coding. it is like your mother.

szkud
03-08-2004, 04:22 PM

omgwtfdan
03-08-2004, 04:25 PM

szkud
03-09-2004, 01:25 AM
thanks

is the php worth it to learn? ...or should I just find someone to write it out for me?

rocket.
03-09-2004, 03:58 AM
Zubaz did offer... :P

zubaz
03-09-2004, 01:15 PM
I'll write it if you don't mind changing those 002.gif type names to 2.gif . Otherwise I have to parse that crap up and I'm pretty lazy.

szkud
03-09-2004, 04:31 PM
nah, I'll do it right now. I'm in dreamweaver to update anyways

szkud
03-09-2004, 04:42 PM
I'll change everything to jpg's as well. the new one's look pretty terrible as 'gifs

brentech
03-09-2004, 08:32 PM
if the images dont have real photos in them, and are completely photoshopped or what not. then you should keep them as .gifs
I consider .jpg to be a image and .gif to be a graphic.

szkud
03-09-2004, 09:24 PM
truenuff is all jpgs

Decoy
03-09-2004, 09:27 PM
truenuff is also completely hand drawn. he said REAL PHOTOS.

szkud
03-09-2004, 09:54 PM
it is? I didn't know that.

my style is evolving. In twenty comics I've gone from black and white lines with three different widths, to full color, gradients, and shading. I don't think gif will be able to follow whatever steps I take next.

Jamblo
03-10-2004, 12:42 AM
Cool comic.

brentech
03-10-2004, 08:52 AM
Yeah. I like the comic too. It's always funnier when you actually know the person that makes it too. hehe, kinda brings things to life
And yeah, three draws everything by hand, and does coloring in photoshop. He's got some pretty neat info on how he does things in the FAQ I believe.

but yeah, with how you do things right now, i think .gif is probably what would work best for you szkud

szkud
03-10-2004, 09:22 PM
other comic artists recommend I use jpgs though.

omgwtfdan
03-11-2004, 03:27 PM
I think its a personal prefrence. See which one looks the best.

szkud
03-11-2004, 03:33 PM
they look the same for now.

Threeboy
03-11-2004, 05:33 PM
if you want sharp crisp lines and your artwork is 'flat' or has text you want to remain legible use gif.

if you have alot of colors (gradients, shading etc) or if it's a photograph use jpeg.

szkud
03-11-2004, 06:38 PM
http://szkud.net/antisplice/comics/20.jpg.jpg http://szkud.net/antisplice/comics/20.gif.gif
no big difference yet. the gif is a little on the crispy side in a bad way if you ask me. [in the gradient coming off the phone].

hey sorry, i've been out of town here's the code. Create a file named comic.php and put this code in it. to access a specific comic like say #4, then you'd link to comic.php?comic=4

<?php
$picExtension = ".jpg";
if(empty($comic)) { $comic = 1; }
$prevNum = $comic - 1;
$prevFileURL = "comic.php?comic=".$prevNum;
if($prevNum<1) {
$prevlink = "&laquo; prev";
} else {
$prevlink = "<a href=\"$prevFileURL\">&laquo prev</a>";
}

$nextNum = $comic + 1;
$nextFileName = $nextNum.$picExtension;
$nextFileURL = "comic.php?comic=".$nextNum;
if(!file_exists($nextFileName)) {
$nextlink = "next &raquo;";
} else {
$nextlink = "<a href=\"$nextFileURL\">next &raquo;</a>";
}

//ACTUAL HTML GENERATION
echo "<center>$prevlink | Comic $comic | $nextlink<BR><BR>";
echo "<img src=\"$comic$picExtension\">"

?>

you can see it at work at http://start.neverwake.net/default/random/comic.php

szkud
03-13-2004, 02:34 PM
does it have to be in the same directory, or can I route it to the 'comics' folder?

Liquor_Riss
03-13-2004, 03:05 PM
you can see it at work at http://start.neverwake.net/default/random/comic.php Hey, those are some pretty funny comics :D

zubaz

if you change the paths yeah, but as it stands now it has to be in the same folder.

that fucking rules zubz. it's simple, i like.

Aniond
03-16-2004, 12:36 PM
Yeah,
Not a bad website design at all. PHP is definately worth learning, but for now take the free code!

szkud
03-18-2004, 02:15 PM
and the forward link doesn't work... I don't get it. but I don't know php

<?php
$picExtension = ".gif";
if(empty($comic)) { $comic = 1; }
$prevNum = $comic - 1;
$prevFileURL = "comic.php?comic=".$prevNum;
if($prevNum<1) {
$prevlink = "&laquo; prev";
} else {
$prevlink = "<a href=\"$prevFileURL\">&laquo prev</a>";
}

$nextNum = $comic + 1;
$nextFileName = $nextNum.$picExtension;
$nextFileURL = "comic.php?comic=".$nextNum;
if(!file_exists($nextFileName)) {
$nextlink = "next &raquo;";
} else {
$nextlink = "<a href=\"$nextFileURL\">next &raquo;</a>";
}

//ACTUAL HTML GENERATION
echo "<center>$prevlink | Comic $comic | $nextlink<BR><BR>";
echo "<img src=\"comics/$comic$picExtension\">"

?>

oh yeah, the most recent comic goes up as a jpg and they archive as gifs

more work but w/e

zubaz
03-18-2004, 02:41 PM
<?php
$picExtension = ".gif";
$folder = "comics";

if(empty($comic)) { $comic = 1; }
$prevNum = $comic - 1;
$prevFileURL = "comic.php?comic=".$prevNum;
if($prevNum<1) {
$prevlink = "&laquo; prev";
} else {
$prevlink = "<a href=\"$prevFileURL\">&laquo prev</a>";
}

$nextNum = $comic + 1;
$nextFileName = $folder.$nextNum.$picExtension;
$nextFileURL = "comic.php?comic=".$nextNum;
if(!file_exists($nextFileName)) {
$nextlink = "next &raquo;";
} else {
$nextlink = "<a href=\"$nextFileURL\">next &raquo;</a>";
}

//ACTUAL HTML GENERATION
echo "<center>$prevlink | Comic $comic | $nextlink<BR><BR>";
echo "<img src=\"$folder/$comic$picExtension\">"
?>
that should do it. you changed the path for the image, but not the image checker - but then again, that wouldn't have been too easy to see if you didn't know php :)

As for a comment on the website design, I like how it is designed simply, like how the comic is using fairly simple drawings (meaning basic [Means good], not pathetic and easily drawn), unlike some sites that manage to design big wizbang graphics for the web pages, but have a comic that is drawn by a three year old with a twitchy hand.

szkud
03-20-2004, 11:57 AM
now the php reflects the same idea

it still doesn't go forward though
