See silencer's setup would have been nice if;
1- If his monitors weren't ancient looking, 2- his carpet was modern, and 3- he properly set up his power cords so he didn't have to go behind the computer (and light it up with a lamp) ;)

09-18-2003, 06:07 PM
1) The desk isn't backwards, there is a space there for cables and as you can see a metal bar running across the back. ;)
2) The carpet does suck. :)
3) Those ancient monitors are ancient because who wants to hook up $300 monitors to a linux box and a windows server. :P
4) The light is there so that it lights up the wall, and so it doesn't hurt your eyesight staring at a computer screen in the darkness. :shock:
SileNceR
09-18-2003, 06:59 PM
1) the desk TOP is backwards, but the frame is the right way - I like my arm space ty very much.
2) the carpet is going to be replaced in the not overly distant future
3) those monitors are sitting there because there is nowhere else to put them. They haven't been plugged in for a few months. LCD coming in the not so distant future.
4) as rocket said; some people value their eyesight - hence the light; and the $600AUD monitor.
L_R - if you haven't heard a set of Altec Lansing ACS45.1 Powercubes I suggest you do so before passing judgement on their size.
The XBOX hat is stretched over a PSU lol. (And the hat is too small also)
Serious Sam - the power cable situation is just fine down there; the light's positioning does as you noticed have the added effect of allowing greater visibility down there - but none of those cables end up being within reach of my feet (i usually rest them on the bar you see running along there); and i've got over a foot to work with when plugging stuff in - this setup is actually easier to pack-up and set-up for LANs than my previous setup where I could get around the entire back of the desk.

Well, it's not that I'm up on it, it's just pretty well known that guns aren't legal in the UK. In what cases are they legal though?
I do have friends in other countries ya know. :) People (not all but some) seem to think all Americans are totally out of touch with every other nation, that's not fair or very true. I've maybe never been to too many other countries (Canada on vacation when I was like 6 or so) but it's not by choice. I"d love to visit England, it's one of the first places I'd visit given the chance.

Well in cases such as hunting e.g. fox hunting, but due to an outbreak of treehuggers that might not be around for much longer. Some police officers in the UK carry guns, they just have to go on a big mental and physical training course, and legalities prevent them from hardly firing a shot.
I knew that certain police officers did carry guns there, but not your average bobby and come to think of it, yeah, I can picture fox hunts, but that's usually with a rifle right? It's handguns though, those would be next to impossible to own right?

Regretably the machine had major problems and had to be returned, at that time I came into extra funds and was able to afford an even better rig but no custom case for it. Eventually though when I start ripping it apart it'll look somewhat like this, but with a different temp display guage and so forth.

heh. glad yas like it. on the left i have my mac, where i do a lot of my photoshop / flash design
the one next to that is like my main computer. the fastest and with most of my programs on there (winxp) the one to the right of that is like an extra cs computer used when i want to play a lan with someone. then the one on the far right is my linux box used for php coding.
there's also a computer in both the rooms next to this one with cs on them so i have great lan parties here heh.
on the left of the mac (the wall) there's a desk that i do paperwork / homework on and shit too so it's basically half my room is filled with computers and desks.

cOnflictXX, Heh.
You thought about everything, haven't you :o
IMHO, the MAC & Linux computers are pointless. You could do the photoshop the flash design projecs on the extra computer.
The PHP programming computer is pretty useless, how much do you program PHP a day, moreover, you could nicely program PHP on the extra computer as well. If you were coding in Perl, Phython etc - that's something else you would want linux for it. but a whole computer just for PHP? jesus. Windows is just fine.

Linux is stupid if you're not going into a career that deals specifically with computers. I dont have it on my machine anymore..but I wouldn't even put it on my computer if I had no reason to learn it.
Software engineers/network administrators don't get jobs because they hate linux...
And yeah, having a computer to just code PHP on it..yeah, is stupid. But when computers or parts are givin to you - i think most people make use of them.
If you've got a whole machine tied up for linux, the smart thing would be to drop the linux and install a real copy of Unix, BSD for instance. Linux is just Unix Lite. What's the point if you've got the room and all for real unix on one of your rigs?
I use a Sparc for my Unix machine.

Yeah, I've got one of them. It's not THAT bad. The sound you get out of it, however quiet it may be, is pretty crisp. The overdrive is alright too. I've had a 25w Park amp for about a year now, which I borrowed from a friend. I'd definately recommend going down that route, while you're still learning, save spending a bomb on a decent amp.

Yeah, I didn't even really want to have to by a dell notebook, but i just needed something to get the job done. It's only going to get used for papers, some small programming, and internet when away from the apartment. Won't use it for much else really, as I purchased it with a 2.6Ghz celeron knowing all this. I can't shuttup about the speakers I just hooked up to my laptop. It's an old 12 year old system I think, my father gave it to me a fair old while ago because he bought a new one. Some how it sounds way better than the 6 month old 5.1 sound system my mother has. Pictures for comparison;
