View Full Version : new mobo = death?

So I got a new motherboard, upgraded from about a 1.33 ghz system to a 2.8. The problem is that when I turn my computer on now, it just cuts right back off after most of the shit powers up. I've kinda got a hunch that the power source isn't manly enough at 300W to cover the new business so I'm gonna try a new one out tommorow, but does anyone else have any ideas?
i'm assuming this happens when you boot up your computer, though you didn't explicitly say that....
shut down and pull out power cord. take out the CMOS and leave it out for 10-15 seconds. put it back in and plug in the power cord.
that's what i'd start with, at least.
if you give me more info as to when it happens EXACTLY, i can help you pinpoint the problem (i.e., if it happens while counting ram, then your mobo probably requires paired ram and you should take one stick out and try again).
and... your computer doesn't use 300W when it's booting. i can guarantee you that much ;)

How do you figure?
And ya, I'm guessing you need a better power supply

one's processor, video card, and drives would have to be running to their fullest extent in order to surpass 300W. during bootup, none of the drivers are loaded and your ram/pf is clear so it's next to impossible for ANY computer to surpass 300W and even closer to impossible for a home user to surpass 300W.
like i said before, though. i'm assuming he's having this problem during bootup. if it's happening once his OS starts and he's trying to run PS, http server, sql server, ftp server, and a game at the same time, then yes. it could very well be the psu.
gg ;)

New power supply is my guess. Thats what my brother needed when he got his nforce motherboard and GeForce FX 5600 card. It kept shutting down on him.
1. New PSU.
2. Flash the bios.
wts?
edit: i have been told that i should elaborate more and not make posts that aren't productive.
sir, if you will, please tell my why you would recommend flashing the bios. i don't understand.

did I not tell you? dont fuckin do the one word post. Even if the word isnt a word and stands for 3 words.
i suppose good i should be making good quality posts, such as:

but lemme guess, you're one of those "Do as i say, not as i do" type of people huh?

i see. should i have said "what the shit" instead?
tell me, kind sir, are there any other acronyms that could get me banned and/or deleted?
your input would be much appreciated.

its not that they are acronyms, its that for no reason you ut "wts?" just explain your self better.
okay, i edited my post. will that suffice?
with all do respect, sir. could you please PM me next time and tell me to be more explicit. see, i'm new here (though i've been here longer than you) and i don't seem to know what posts are considered "non-productive." and i ask that you PM me because i don't want to hijack another thread, especially a thread created by zubaz.

well in a totally unrelated problem, my internet recently died, so I'm on (heaven help me) dial up. I got a new PSU, no help, reset the bios, nothing, switched out video card, nothing, switched out memory, nothing. I think I'm just going to have to send this shit back. If I didn't know any better, i'd say I shorted it out in the install, but I REALLY don't think I did. Arrrrr.... but yeah, that's why I hadn't responded. And no threads were hijacked and everyone just keep your goddamn pants on. FUCK! I just tried something else and my finger touched the PCU fan and two blades broke off. SHIT, i bet they won't take it back now. ARRRRR
what's PCU, or did you mean CPU or PSU?
CPU fans can easily be replaced. i've never replaced the one that came with a PSU, though.
are you sure you got all of the LEDs, switches, system speakers, etc setup correctly? that's always been the most difficult part for me. i think the switches are the only ones that matter and if they're hooked up incorrectly i don't think it will even begin to start. i could be wrong, though.
perhaps if the power switch is plugged in where the reset switch should be plugged in, it might just reset as soon as you let go of the power button. that'd be pretty funny, but i don't think that would happen.
when you say you "reset the bios" do you mean you took out the CMOS? or did you just go into your bios and choose "restore defaults" or whatever?
try booting up with only a keyboard and one stick of ram hooked up. listen for beeps (revert to user manual for info on the beeps). now plug in a pci video card. see what errors you get (if you get that far). hook up hdds and so on... my friend once thought that his mobo was fried during a blackout. turns out, the parallel port was fried and all he had to do was unhook his printer. he went about 2 months without a computer until i said "let's get this thing working."

PSU - Power Supply Unit
that was already stated in this thread.
nevertheless, thanks your input
sir, if you will, please tell my why you would recommend flashing the bios. i don't understand.
I do it for fun whenever I do hardware changes.
I guess you could say I love flashing.
NOW GET THE FUCK BACK ON SUBJECT.

My PSU seems to be screwed up at the moment. I turn on my computer and it does nothing for a minute or two. My monitor acts like it is not receiving a signal, my hard drive and power lights remind on constantly as well as both my CD drives and then it all starts working fine. Once it is up and running, I have no problems with it.

I meant CPU, I just can't type and I'm on dailup so my usual nazi grammar is just going ot have to wait until I can edit posts. I mean that I took out the CMOS, or rather switched it from pins 2&3 to pins 1&2 and back which was supposed to reset it. I never get any beeps, and I've taken out all peripherals and anything that's not necessary for a boot. all that's connected is the video card, PSU, hard drive, keyboard, and power switch.
hook up the system speaker to hear beeps.
what happened when you only had that stuff hooked up? did you try putting in a PCI video card? if your agp slot is fried, a pci card could help.
if you can take it back, by all means, do so. it seems like you might have smoked something. ;)
