I've heard of a way to open up ports on a router to enable certain things to go through. How do i do this in Windows XP, I have a basic idea of which ports to open already

When you say router, do you mean firewall?
And for what reason do you need this knowledge?

Most routers allow you to forward ports on your router to your PC. Usually this is done by typing in the router IP address to your browser to bring up the router's setup. Under my router, the option for port forwarding is called Virtual Server under Configuration. I would only do this if you know what you are doing.
first try going to http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1
name/pass will probably be admin/admin or admin and no pass. administrator/admin... you get the picture :)
if neither of those work, read on...
start > run
cmd
ipconfig
note: "default gateway"
now go to http://[default gateway here]
and brentech, a router is a firewall.
PS
if none of those passwords work, then you'll have to revert to rtfm :P

Uh, a router is NOT a firewall. Lots of routers have built in firewalls, but a router is NOT a firewall. Firewalls are created to work with routers, but they are far from the same thing.
i was under the impression that routers, by definition, are firewalls. and what you're thinking of are routers with built-in software-based firewalls. but routers, themselves, are hardware-based firewalls.
i could be wrong, though. :?
