Which is the better program?

Don't just say that "X is much better then Y". Give the reasons for that, with good points and bad points on each. Also try to keep plugins and such in mind when making a decision.

I've added a poll, but don't just vote, post your opinion!

P.S I didn't know where to stick this thread so move it to where you think it would fit best.

there's no "better" i'm sure that they both have pro's and cons :P

its like debating macs vs pc's, people have thier preferences.

HOWEVER, here's my insight...

The industry used to be like this
GAMING: 3DSMax.
MOVIES: Maya

but I'm hearing that alot of the game companys (ones around vancouver atleast) are switching to Maya.

I've only really used 3DSMax, I might be fiddling witih maya for a course soon though.

It doesn't really matter what industry uses what, it comes down to what skills you have and what you're willing to learn.

However it also depends on what is the latest and greatest of the 3 (4 maybe) top 3d apps. Lightwave, 3dsm, Maya, XSI and if you're godly rich Houdini. Personally I think it comes down to a preference, and in reality these programs USUALLY have the same methods when it comes to various techniques, such as spline modelling, or nurbs, etc.

Between 3dsm and Maya however, I'd go with Maya. I've found 3dsm to be clunky as hell, and it forces some anti-piracy software even with a legit license. Personally I love Lightwave's modelling/animation setup. Not sure if Maya has that. Only reason for maya in this battle, would be Price and size and potential support of the community.

I'm actually a huge lightwave fan, but have you got it on this poll? No. Don't worry sam, I read your post and I agree, Maya is the better of the two in question. It's a fair way easier to use and you can be a complete testicle head and still make something pretty with it.

well i haven“t tested maya, but i have used lightwave and 3dmax, and i must say, lightwave is really nice specialy the separation of the animation and the modeling, but 3dmax had a easier community, i mean to find since most guys use 3dmax over lightwave.

So most of you people are saying that Lightwave would be the better choice of both 3DMax and Maya?

like everything has its pros and cons, you just need to look for one that fits you, i will choose 3d max or lightwave, they are both really nice programs

i had to do some formZ stuff last semester. was kind of hard since they set aside one class to teach us. (3 or 4 hours) which isn't enough. ...it's advised that we take a specific class to learn it... my model came out screwed up cuz the measurements weren't exact..

I made my first model in Maya just the other day (following a tutorial). It was easy enough to do, I was having some fun while learning. And then I had to texture and light the thing. How god damn fustrating was that. But I did eventually figure out how to do it, just glad I'm over that learning speed bump.
