Power Outage (http://www.globeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20030814.wbpower0814_3/BNStory/Front/)

What do you think it is ??
Wise Act of Terrorisme Trying to stop USA Economy ?
Power Plant crash ?

At 4:15 p.m. the blackout also cut power to such U.S. cities as New York, Cleveland and Detroit.

It's 23:35 p.m. and they're still in the dark.

Wrong, there was no fire in a nuclear power plant in Pensilvanya.

BTW, north american electrecity networks can be divided in 4 parts : East, West, Quebec and Texas. Quebec and Texas are fully independant on the electricity network so that's why there was electricity in Gatineau and not in Ottawa, just had to cross the river, meh.

I was watching CNN yesterday and the said that it resulted from an overload of the power grid (too much demand for electricity) and that combined with a failure at a main station, which caused a cascade failure in all affected areas. That's just what I remember about it. I may have forgotten some things, but it wasn't a terrorist attack.

In my opinion, if we live in a world that shits on themselves everytime there is a blackout, then we failed as a race. I understand that mild chaos must occur, but for people to be breaking out crying becuase they feel that their precious country that is so amazingly wonderful ( I hate the U.S ) is being attacked by some crazy guy with a towel on his head, hell, maybe even a baseball cap. U.S = 11,000 + people shot by a gun each year / Almost no other country in the entire world made it past 300; I say almost because of the middle east in general. In conclusion, I'm moving to Canada. haha

I'm glad you hate the US, but we really don't care. Hate us all you want, but first, before you start rattling of statistics about gun violence, find out how much money we give in humanitarian aid and assistance to other countries. Find out how we rank in dollars and number of people working for the betterment of others. Go ahead and be a hater, but do us all a favor and keep it to yourself or do something about what you don't approve of.

Mr.Penguin
08-18-2003, 02:24 PM
Chesh, I'm glad you love the U.S, but as you stated, keep it to yourself? Sure thing Pal, so we have money, and that makes us better? I suppose you may think so, but I truly do not. Why help others when we cant even help ourselves. It isnt always the bigger picture, but what is going on inside of our own borders. And I actually dont remember reading rules that people may not post about how they feel concerning a certain topic.

Terrorism was the first thing to be ruled out. If you watched any of the news, I'm sure you would of heard about that. And who the hell cares if people thought there might have been a terrorist attack, god for bit citizens in NY get scared when something like that goes wrong. I mean, only a few thousand parents and children died because of a catastrophe less than 2 years ago.

Take your head out of your ass.

I didn't say we were better than anyone because we have money. If you want to read my post like that, then you are going to miss the point. I'm glad you think that we should eliminate all our problems before helping other people, I just think that might be a bit selfish.

I didn't say you can't express yourself, I was just hinting at that fact that you are a hypocrite if all you to do is complain and not do anything about it. I think the saying says that youre a part of the problem if you arent part of the solution.

If you weren't trying to upset anyone, why claim that humanity has failed just because some people's reaction to a blackout? You don't think that might offend anyone? Maybe it's understandable that the people of NY thought it might be a terrorist attack considering almost 3,000 people died a little less than 3 years ago there. A lot of people watched those people die in front of them. They smelled the burning fuel and experienced the loss of a part of their city. How can you belittle them because they overreacted a little from an enormous power outage?

I'm sorry you feel we can't help ourselves because we try to help others. Have fun in Canada.

Mr.Penguin
08-18-2003, 07:32 PM
I will have fun in Canada, Thank you for being concerned. I also never said that humanity failed, but was speaking more directly towards americans. Maybe I am wrong to say that amerians failed, but statistics cant just be ignored. When we have kids in preschool bringing guns to school, and kids shooting each other while trying to recieve a public education, and banks that provide guns if you simply sign up at the bank. Complaining is a verb, so in fact I am doing something, and am not a hyprocrite. You may call me a hyprocrite when I purchase a gun becuase I'm afraid that someone is going to steal my kid. I'm 16, do you want me to run for president? Bassic, I hope you get shot in the leg during a bank robbery and lose your leg.

brentech
08-18-2003, 08:35 PM
Yeah. Our country does have a lot of problems, but so does every other country. You see, other countries have problems with such things as A.I.D.S to the point where it is an epidemic. Others, still have tuberculosis. And the *Toronto* area recently had SARS. There are so many huge diseases out there...that effect entire countries, the mass of their population that is. Don't forget about the kids that are starving. . .because I mean geez...that isn't happening anywhere
What I am getting at here is that 'yes', these things are still happening here in the U.S., but the cases here are quite diminutive.

You have to realize how advanced our society is. Yeah, other countries have lived without the most of these problems too, but we also have a certain level of freedom in which many countries do not have. I just think you take many things for granted. I'm not too much older than you, but I can tell you this: you don't even know what life is yet.

You probably think everything that our country does is wrong, but you just haven't learned. Take the time to learn your legal system, and all your rights, the government is quite smart really. Just realize how protected you are.

If you really want to act like your actually trying to do something for the better: then take up a cause, or get a job that consists of helping others. Maybe the reason "america has failed" is because people like you that just cry and complain instead of taking action.

Just because you heard about or watched "Bowling For Columbine", it doesn't make your point any less void. Many countries have the same hypocrocies, but more responsibility comes with more freedom.

Just live your life peaceful, don't trash an enitire culture, considering we are made of of hundreds, for something that only a few (in proportion) do. And remember how many millions of people have come to America to get away from their native land.

werd to Brentech - now it's my turn.
Sigh, where do I start? First of all, you said we failed as a race. Our race is humans, not Americans. "Statistics just can't be ignored" - please oh please don't say you meant that. Where did you get your statistics? Reuters? CNN? No probably not. And I don't recall you siting any statistics either... "Complaining is a verb, so in fact I am doing something" - please oh please don't say you meant that. I'm serious this time. Did that make sense to you? They meant that complaining is not helping the problem, not that it wasn't a verb. Please don't try to use semantics as a argument point again, or I'll ban you just to ensure that our younger viewers don't think that's a valid way to think. You're afraid someone is going to steal your child? You actually have a kid? Aren't you 16? If you're 16 and have a kid, you've got more important things to think about than saving/hating America buddy. Oh and that was super mature to wish someone else would lose their leg in your last sentence. Way to be a good dad jackass.

chesh
08-18-2003, 10:04 PM
I'd like to think that your whole argument isn't based on what you saw in Bowling for Columbine, but I honestly don't. Like brentech said, all countries have their problems. Yes, we might have gun control issues, but it's easy to criticize, especially when you have propagandists like Michael Moore to hide behind (though 5 or 6 people could probably hide behind him). I know that Moore won an award for his film: a work of fiction and not the documentary it has been sold as.

I think that you might want to do the research yourself on the "facts" you hear about in movies. Go to a site like this one (http://www.hardylaw.net/Truth_About_Bowling.html) and read for yourself. Don't worry. I checked and this isn't the only site removing Moore from his soapbox.

This conversation is really being run into the ground and I probably should not have replied again, but I really am tired of hearing hollywood facts from people who think they are doing something by complaining. I'm sorry you didn't understand fully what I meant when I suggested you do something (aside from complaining) to remedy the problems you see. I sure as hell am glad that there are people that take action and don't just regurgitate what they see in the theatres to try and impress a handful of people in a public forum.

Hoping someone gets shot in the leg during a bank robbery sure gives me motivation to take what you say seriously. I'm a few years older than you (7) and I know that hating everything and everyone that contradicts you isn't going to get you too far in anything. You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but woud you really say this crap to anyone's face? It's a luxury for you to be able to say you hope someone gets shot without having to look them in the face.

I think brentech is absolutely right. Try to relax and maybe you'll see the grey area in-between the black and white. It's good to have a strong opinion, but it's action, not words, that entitles one to respect.

Wow, Brentech, that was one of the best posts ive read in a long time.

And uh, lets see, ...

There isnt much I can say that hasnt already been said. I agree that instead of sitting on your ass infront of the computer, you should get up and go do something productive. And, you wont move to Canada, your 16... what state do you live in? I assume you dont have a job or know about money yet? Yeah, it takes MONEY to move, and to move to Canada, that would cost quite a few bucks. So I doubt youll ever even leave the state your in. I once said "When Im done with High School, im moving to Canada" but *eh* thats not gonna go throiugh, I might visit canada but hell, I could never be so far from my family. And lets just say you DO move to Canada, whos to say you will be happy living there? Canada DOES have problems, not as big as Americas but they do have them. You want to live somewhere where you can do pretty much anything you want? Mr. Antigovernment kid. Move to Mexico or something, I was just down there for the weekend, no one cares about the laws or anything, no one worries about it, I almost died like 3 times crossing the street. People run red lights and stuff. So yeah, Mexico would be your place. *I got so drunk*

I really dont know if anything I said made sense, im rushing right now, I have to leave soon. So uhh, read it carfully.

I didn't say we help them with bombs and guns. Along with volunteers and non-profit organizations, the Unites States Army soldiers physically hand out food and supplies to those in need. Military equipment is used to transport and deliver medical supplies and food. Also, you might want to spell Iraq correctly if you're trying to make someone look stupid.

I think this is just kind of a mix up on both sides.

If I were to go to a French territory, I wouldn't start to spell 'brent' in whatever the French version would be. A person's name does not change on that level. But if someone was born in french territory..they would probably name them the 'brent' equivalent.

As for countries and such other things, proper names will change in spelling.
