Teehee, I just installed Mandrake Linux and am surfing the net with Konqueror, yay! It feels almost the same as Windows (with KDE running anyway).. go figure. I really don't know how to do anything yet, but I'll learn. :P The install was super easy, anyway. I don't know how much I'll actually USE this operating system, I just feel cooler with it installed. I guess there isn't much you can use Linux for in the way of games. So, who else runs/ran linux, and what do you/did you use it for?

I'll install Linux when all the programs I want to use will be compatible with it... this means... not now. *meh*

Here is a site that has some links different games for the linux system.

Wow, I didn't know the Quake series and Unreal Tournaments supported linux! Also, what's a good mp3 player like winamp that works for linux?

To be honest with you, I've never ran Linux.
I've wanted to give it a try, and since you brought it up now, I am thinking I might install it on my back-up harddrive, which currently has nothing on it.

Maybe try here for the MP3 player.

Also, while reading about Linux on their homepage, they linked to this program, which converts Windows programs so they can be ran under Linux.

I don't really have any uses for linux either.. which is why I don't run it.

I'm currently downloading Mandrake 9.1
Figure I should give it a try, I don't use my backup drive for anything right now anyways -- so why not.

I have a Unix class in a few semesters too, might as well use Linux to break into the Unix world :)

XMMS comes bundled with most linux distros and looks just like winamp.

and using WINE/WINEX you can often run games (you also have to install proper kernel stuff for ur video card etc)

That's what I did. I wanted to run it on my other machine in case I pooched something, but it doesn't boot off cd-rom right and it would've been a biatch to make work.

I might've considered listening to mp3's with linux, but the problem is that all of them are on my fat32 partitions and since linux can't read fat32 and windows can't read linux partitions... :(

What kinda "kernel stuff" do you have to install for your video card? I noticed Mandrake installing something that sounded like DirectX during the first install, but how would WINE mimic DirectX without actually having it installed?

depends on your video card, if you're running an nVidia based card then goto nvidia.com and their drivers section should have a linux part with a readme and all the files you need to do this (who knows your distro may already have it)

otherwise im not sure...

and as for DirectX, seeing as all it is is a universal set of commands that performs the same function on any video card (Whereas in the past, programmers had to write different code for different cards), WINE may be able to emulate it (not sure)... in general OpenGL should work fine anyway....

Currently running Linux Mandrake 9.1
It is quite different. Kinda muffles the text on a lot of webpages, but all else seems fine.
The only problem I am having right now, is that I don't believe I have any sound.

grab opera from opera.com;

should work ust as good as opera in windows :)

and sound in linux, at least from my experience; is a cunt.

You can use linux if you have multiple machines. Older machines run it just fine so its not like if you want to use linux, you have to use a really nice new machine. Its not like the cost matters either so you can easily do it without worrying about paying a dime.

No, Linux can read FAT32 partitions, just not NTFS ones. And yes Windows can't read Linux partitions.

Linux CAN read NTFS, it cannot write to NTFS.

It can read and write FAT32, FAT16, and numerous other Filesystesm (such as HPFS used by IBM's OS2/Warp)

linux can also communicate with windows SMB based networks and macintosh appletalk networks, as well as unix based networks etc.

Soooo...whats so great about Linux?

Soooo...whats so great about Linux?

If you get into internet applications, and industry servers - you will find that most of these machines are run with a linux/unix OS. Due to the fact that they ARE more stable machines. And the fact that they do not take many system requirements.

The reason I put it onto my 2nd harddrive is just so I could learn the basics and get a feel for the system. I have to take a "Unix and C,C++" class next year during the late semester.

If you're not willing to learn by yourself, no one else is going to get you to do it.

it's extremely fast and powerful when compared to windows (and when set up properly and used by someone who knows how to ;))

and it's free (yes, I know windows is too if you get the gold-cd edition; but that's not LEGALLY free is it...)

that is, provided this SCO shit dies down (check your favourite news portal [slashdot?] if you don't know about that already)

So how would I go about reading the files off my fat32 partition (which is on the same drive)?

Oh, and how do I change my screen resolution, too? I specified 1024x768 when I installed and it's driving me mad.

most linux installers will mount it, but just do man mount,

prolly depending on the partition it will be something like #mount vfat /dev/hda3 /mount/cdrive

goto the linux documentation project or search in google linux (www.google.com/linux)

but just do man mountJust be sure no-one is watching.

I have Red Hat 9.0 installed on one of my PCs. The problem is that only has a 4.0 gig hard drive and the Windows 98 partition is currently taking up 2.5 gigs. I think it is time to lose Windows completely!

Or to get a larger HD! You can get 120 gigs for less than $100 now.

depends where you live.. not only because of the conversion rate (i assume NZ hardware prices are a tad more costly than their aussie counterparts?)..

haha nice call on the "man mount" command chrisv... lol.

Good point. I think I will get a new 120 gig for my better machine and then give the Linux machine one of its 40 gigs. Thanks guys.
Generally NZ prices are more expensive due to a worst exchange rate to the USD and less competition compared to Oz.

Alternatively you could order from good quality aussie shops and prolly still pay about the same? you wouldnt have to pay our gst would u?... hmm... wonder what postage is like...

Silencer already pointed out my mistake. Check the last page Shamus.
I am getting my 120 gig this weekend for NZ $186.75. It is the cheapest I could get.
