This is for ANY Microsoft Windows users.
If you haven't already got the new updates. I suggest getting them really soon, specially if you are using broadband.
Read the first bit of the article at CNN's site.
Basically..there is just a big flaw that you need to get the update to fix.
http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/internet/07/31/internet.atttack/index.html
The flaw is well known to hackers, I suggest just going to your "windows update" utility and getting those soon.

firewall != virus scanner
Threeboy
08-12-2003, 12:45 PM
yes, but worms propogate thru open ports which is hard to stop no matter what level of intelligence you have.
If you're smart, you can pretty much make sure you dont get viruses thru email and downloads..
but yes, virus scanners are also a must have item and keep them up to date too or they're semi-useless.

If you're talking about viruses and firewalls that way, ya, they do sometimes. :P

heard about some new virus today on the radio, I forgot what they called it. They also said that it was mainly with XP, so I'm not sure if it is the same one, or a new one. Do you guys really think it is important to have a virus scanner, and if so, where can I get one? I use the xp firewall, and the firewall on my router, but I'm sure that is probably not enough.

If you have common sense, you really don't need to worry about having a scanner. If you don't however, get one NOW! ;)

W32.Blaster.Worm is currently the one causing all the problems.

word. I had it. It was on all 4 of the computers on my network. 3 of the 4 (My dads, brothers and sisters) computers were formatted and they found that they still had the virus. I called a friend of mine whos dad works for the county and he told me what to do. I went to symantec.com got the update followed the directions and now im the only one that doesnt have it. Wee. Everyone in my family got scared and their first instinct was to format haha. Losers.

Had to upload them for work, because I couldn't remember where the fuck I got them from.

How would formatting not kill it?

Although killing it is the idea of formatting -- formatting is just a little extreme. Don't get me a wrong, a good format is good every now and then, but if your going to format everytime you get a virus. . .then you shouldn't be using a computer in the first place.
Now if it actually destroyed the most of the software..then sure, but I am sure any damage is recoverable.

Heh, my dad went on the internet at the RCMP K division headquarters in edmonton on a computer he had just finished setting up so it had no firewall and no antivirus software installed yet. So basically he infected most of the computers there... good times good times.

Either head over to Microsoft (www.microsoft.com) or Adelphia (www.adelphiapowerpage.com) and they'll hook you up with the tools to stop and remove the virus.

heh, I can't get to windows update.. I read on symantec that the worm trys to DOS attack it
In addition to spreading and crashing machines, the worm leaves instructions for the infected computer to launch a so-called denial of service attack this Saturday against Microsoft's Web site where people can download patches.
Saturday will mark one month since Microsoft issued the patch for the security hole the worm uses to wiggle onto computers.
Basically...the reason you can't get your updates as of RIGHT NOW, is because sooooo many people are trying to download the updates at the same time :?
That's why I told all of you fools in advance :P
haha

...with HTML turned off...
it's perfectly capable of working with that code, it just isn't enabled.
[edit - added text below]
i dont understand how so many ppl with xp got it...
even the internet firewall that comes with xp stops it; if enabled....
if everyone had a little common sense and used that or a 3rd party firewall, this problem wouldn't exist for XP users (Except in a network environment where the infection comes from the network interface not the internet interface...)

You gotta take into account that A) the XP firewall is OFF by default and B) most Windows users don't know enough about computers to even know what a firewall IS. :?
chesh
08-15-2003, 09:23 AM
Using a firewall isn't even necessary. All one had to do was keep their comp updated at Windows Update and everything would be peachy.
SileNceR
08-16-2003, 12:51 AM
well if the XP firewall is off by default, it's microsoft's fault that the vulnerability is effecting all these machines... they built the feature; they should have enabled it by default - especially on xp home...
